Who was odin?
Odin, often referred to as the Allfather in Norse mythology, is a complex and multifaceted deity known for his wisdom, shamanism, and poetry. He is the chief of the Aesir tribe of deities and one of the most prominent figures in the Norse pantheon. Odin’s quest for knowledge and wisdom is unending, and he is willing to pay great prices for it, such as sacrificing his own eye for a drink from the well of wisdom.
His relationship with mead is particularly significant due to the tale of the Mead of Poetry. This mead was a magical potion that granted anyone who drank it the gift of wisdom and the skill of poetry. The story begins with the creation of a wise being named Kvasir from the spit of the gods. Kvasir was later killed by two dwarves, who mixed his blood with honey to create the Mead of Poetry.
Odin, in his relentless pursuit of wisdom, learned of this mead and set out to acquire it. He employed his cunning and guile to ultimately retrieve the mead from the giant Suttung, who had hidden it away. Odin succeeded in his quest and shared the mead with the gods and humanity, thus becoming associated with the divine inspiration of poets and scholars.
